Points of Pride

  • Alumni Advisory Board: This board was created and had its first meeting during spring 2008.

  • Outstanding Registered Student Organization for 2010-2011: The Spanish Club was recognized as Outstanding Philanthropic Registered Student Organization. The Club's advisor is Marinelly Castillo-Zuniga.

  • Alma Latina Award for outstanding activity in Spanish Club for 2010-2011: Laura Soppet and Kelsey Giger were recipients of this award.

  • LAN has a high number of Bone Scholarship recipients.  Kelsey Coker (Spanish) was awarded the Robert G. Bone Scholarship for 2010-2011, and Caitlin Kopp (Spanish) and Laura Soppet (Spanish) are recipients for 2011-2012.

  • Dr. Andy Weeks delivered the keynote speech at Oxford University in the fall of 2010.

  • Scott M. Elliot Award for Outstanding Staff/Civil Servicefor 2011: Sharon R. Griffin, Office Manager and Secretary to the Chair was the worthy recipient of this award.

  • Alumni Visits: Alumni frequently visit campus to speak to students. Recent visitors include Andy Hillier, Rafiq Ahmed and Catherine McDonald.

  • LAN Faculty Searches: Dr. Bruce Burningham was selected to replace Dr. Dan Everett as LAN Department Chair and Dr. Alejandro Enriquez was hired in a Tenure Track Spanish position.

  • Dr. Andy Weeks was selected as one of two Arts and Sciences Distinguished Lecturers for 2011-2012.

  • Dr. Ben Schmeiser has been selected to receive Honorable Mention for the CAS Excellence Award for Outstanding Teaching by a Pre-Tenure Faculty Member.

  • Website: The Department's website was again overhauled and is much more effective as a tool for marketing, administration, and dissemination of information. It is constantly updated by webmaster Laura Edwards and individual faculty members.

  • Graduate Student Awards: During the 2010-11 year, Amy Muszyinski won the Charter Department award for Excellence.  Amke De Boes received the Montserrat Vilarrubla Award for Excellence in Teaching. Each award carried a modest cash prize. 

  • Graduate Study Abroad Stipends: Megan O'Connell, Molly Bundy and Alexandra Shaeffer received travel stipends for studies in Seville, Spain (for one year), Peru (for the 2011 summer), and Grenoble, France (for the 2011 summer).

  • Undergraduate Study Abroad Stipends and Scholarships: Bess Lanker received the Petrossian-Tarrant Scholarship to study in Grenoble, France during the summer of 2011.  Brianna Coleman, Adam Gebler, Megan Braffet and Kyle Whisenhunt all received the German Alumni New Student Scholarship in 2010-2011.  Kristofer Lindsey was awarded the David J. Parent Scholarship in German.  Bridget Looby received the Allie Ward Billingsley Scholarship in Spanish.

  • Study Abroad:During fall '10, spring and summer '11, student participation in our various study abroad programs continued to be high. 41 students studied in Granada, 8 in Angers, 4 in Bonn, 7 in Paderborn, and 1 in Marburg, 9 in Grenoble and 2 in Quebec.

  • Grammar Help Center: The Grammar Help center was initiated during Fall 2000 by the Department, and is staffed by graduate student instructors. Each of the Department's graduate assistants holds part of his/her designated office hours at the Center. Graduate assistants answer language-related questions for beginning and intermediate foreign language students on a drop-in-basis, serving 150+ students per year.
