Teaching Interests:
J.M. van der Laan has taught every level of German language, literature, and culture at Illinois State University.   He has also been much involved in the university general education program and taught courses on literature from around the world, on the Western tradition,  as well as on Europe since 1945.  In his upper-level seminars in German, he has conducted courses on Goethe's Faust, on Marx, Nietzsche, and Freud, on the German novel, and on technology in German culture, not to mention many others.
