German Teacher Education Major Requirements

All incoming French Teacher Ed majors are strongly encouraged to take and pass the State of Illinois Basic Skills Test (now called TAP) their first semester at ISU.
German Teacher Education Requirements
All German Teacher Education majors must complete these classes:
Minimum hours requirement: 49 hours
- LAN 111.13: First Year German Part I
- LAN 112.13: First Year German Part II
- LAN 115.13: Second Year German Part I
- LAN 116.13: Second Year German Part II
- LAN 211.13: Introduction to German Literature
- LAN 213.13: Intermediate German Composition
- LAN 217.13: German Culture and Civilization
- LAN 317.13: German Culture and Civilization
- LAN 322.13: Survey of German Literature
- LAN 310.13: Advanced Study of the German Language
- LAN 300.13-level literature class
- LAN 319.11 fall only, 4 hrs,
Principles in Foreign Language Learning
- LAN 320.11 spring only, 2 hrs/6 weeks,
Foreign Language Teaching in the K-12 Setting
- Enough elective classes in German (either through study abroad or through taking 385.13 a second and third time) to meet the minimum hours requirement.
Please Note:
- * Students who will be applying for their initial teaching certification or additional endorsements as of 2/1/2012 must have a grade of “C” or above in all required coursework that is part of their program. This includes all endorsement areas, major courses and professional education.
- OPI score of Intermediate High required before taking 319.11
- OPI score of Advanced Low required for 320.11 and Student Teaching

Register to take the OPI with 2 weeks of your return from study abroad.
Curriculum and Instruction Requirements
All German Teacher Education majors must complete these classes:
- EAF 228, 231 OR 235 (228 preferred) *
- C&I 210: Child Growth and Development
- C&I 212: Issues in Secondary Education **
Admission to Professional Studies required to take any courses below this point.
- C&I 214: Literacy in the Content Areas of Secondary Ed
- C&I 216 in conjunction with C&I 216.13: Instructional & Evaluative Methods in Secondary Ed (or 289.75 plus lab, 216.13=combined 214/216, plus lab)
The classes below are for a teacher to be "Highly Qualified" to teach at the Middle School Level. Our majors are not required to take these, but are encouraged to try to fit them into their summer schedules, if possible. Our majors are blocked from these classes during the fall and spring semesters.
* Take after 60 hours of coursework
