For the past five years Dr. Pancrazio has driven to Little Village schools on report-card pickup days. He’s brought along some 250 college students on his trips. All are advanced students of Spanish. Nearly all plan to become teachers themselves. Pancrazio talks to his college students about conveying cultural perspectives. He tells them Hispanic parents often spend lots of time expressing gratitude for teachers’ work. And he tells them they might end up translating conversations about immigration or health—since the school may be parents’ main connection to this society.

This year LAN welcomes a new Assistant Professor, Dr. Alejandro Enriquez, to the faculty. Dr. Enriquez holds a Ph.D. in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Literatures and Linguistics from the University of Minnesota. His teaching and research interests include colonial literature and culture, postcolonial discourse and theory, as well as contemporary Latin American narrative and film, with a special interest in México, the U.S.-Mexico border, and Latinos in the United States.
Dr. Enriquez has presented his research in national and international conferences and has published in scholarly journals such as Chasqui: revista de literatura latinoamericana, Studies in Latin American Popular Culture, Colonial Latin American Review, and The Americas: A Journal of Inter-American Cultural History. He is a member of the Latin American Studies Association, the Modern Language Association, the Society of Early Americanists, and Feministas Unidas. Presently, he is working on a book titled Friar-Conquistador: Franciscan Discourses of Spiritual Conquest in Colonial Yucatán.
In honor of Mexican Independence, Dr. Enriquez recently gave presentations on Mexico, Mexican Independence, and Mexican identity at meetings of the Spanish Club and ALAS, the Association of Latin American Students. You can learn more about his research interests in general by visiting his website, and specifically by coming to his research presentation as part of the Latin American and Latino Studies Latino Heritage Month Celebrations. He will present a paper titled, “Marianism and Religious Syncretism in Colonial Mexico: Cultural Imposition, Negotiation, or Resistance? The Case of the Immaculate Conception in Izamal, Yucatan,” October 14, 2011 at noon in Schroeder 115.
Outstanding students of Spanish have the chance to be recognized in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures’ revitalized chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Spanish Honor Society. Members of this prestigious organization have opportunities to win study abroad scholarships and practice their Spanish within the community and university setting. Questions?
