Spanish Online Readiness Tests

General Information

The first four Spanish courses at Illinois State are numbered 111.15, 112.15, 115.15, 116.15, and are taken one at a time. At the 200 level, students choose from among a variety of courses focusing on conversation, culture, linguistics and literature, and often take several in the same semester. All of these courses are offered both Fall and Spring semesters, and you can start at any 100-level course, according to your own level of skill. If you place into the 200-level, you must begin in 213.15, the prerequisite for all other 200-level Spanish classes.

Traditionally, students with 0-1 years of high school Spanish have been advised to begin in 111, 2-3 years in 112, and 4 years in 115. However, Spanish programs in high schools and community colleges vary widely, so the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures has developed "readiness tests" to help you decide which of our courses is right for you. After you take the test, you will see a recommendation based on the score you received. The tests are anonymous so we encourage you to not seek help while you complete the test.

Please, consider that ALL our Spanish classes are taught in Spanish and oral skills (speaking) are emphasized in the classroom. If your experience with Spanish is not recent, we recommend you register for a lower Spanish class than you may have anticipated.

Your score on this placement guide will help you to make a more informed decision about which Spanish course to start with at Illinois State. It does not confer any course credit or grade, and it will not serve to block or permit your enrollment in a given course. For more information, check our FAQ's page or  contact Laura Edwards.
