Spanish Teacher Education Major Requirements

All incoming French Teacher Ed majors are strongly encouraged to take and pass the State of Illinois Basic Skills Test (now called TAP) their first semester at ISU.

Spanish Teacher Education Requirements

All Spanish Teacher Education majors must complete these classes:

  • LAN 111.15: First Year Spanish Part I
  • LAN 112.15: First Year Spanish Part II
  • LAN 115.15: Second Year Spanish Part I*
  • LAN 116.15: Second Year Spanish Part II*
  • LAN 213.15: Advanced Spanish Grammar (213 is the prerequisite for 215, 223, 233, 243 and 244)**
  • LAN 215.15: Introduction to Spanish Linguistics
  • LAN 223.15: Advanced Spanish Composition
  • LAN 233.15: Introduction to Hispanic Literature
  • LAN 243.15: Cultura Española
  • LAN 244.15: Hispanic American Civilisation
  • LAN 319.11: Principles in Foreign Language Learning (4 hour course, offered Fall only)***
  • LAN 320.11: Six Weeks Foreign Language Teaching in the K-12 setting (2 hour course, offered Spring only)****
  • 9 electives credits, 6 of which must be at the 300-level in Spanish.

Please Note:

  • Students who will be applying for their initial teaching certification or additional endorsements as of 2/1/2012 must have a grade of “C” or above in all required coursework that is part of their program.  This includes all endorsement areas, major courses and professional education.
  • * Students much earn a 'B' or better in 115.15 and 116.15 in order to enroll in LAN 213.15.
  • ** Students must earn a 'B' or better in LAN 213.15 in order to enroll in LAN 215.15, 223.15, or 233.15, 243 and 244.
  • ***OPI score of Intermediate High required before taking 319.11
  • ****OPI score of Advanced Low required for 320.11 and Student Teaching
    Note about the OPI:
    Register to take the OPI with 2 weeks of your return from study abroad.

Curriculum and Instruction Requirements


All Spanish Teacher Education majors must complete these classes:

    • EAF 228, 231 OR 235 (228 preferred) *
    • C&I 210: Child Growth and Development
    • C&I 212: Issues in Secondary Education **

    Admission to Professional Studies required to take any courses below this point.

    • C&I 214: Literacy in the Content Areas of Secondary Ed
    • C&I 216 in conjunction with C&I 216.13: Instructional & Evaluative Methods in Secondary Ed (or 289.75 plus lab, 216.13=combined 214/216, plus lab)

    The classes below are for a teacher to be "Highly Qualified" to teach at the Middle School Level. Our majors are not required to take these, but are encouraged to try to fit them into their summer schedules, if possible. Our majors are blocked from these classes during the fall and spring semesters.

    • Psych 302
    • C&I 233.01

    * Take after 60 hours of coursework
    **C or better req. in ENG 101 and COM 110.
    *** Psychology 110/111 prerequisite

Recommended Endorsement

The Department strongly recommends that Spanish Teach Education majors received a middle-level “highly qualified” endorsement. Please note that these classes must be taken over the summer because they are not open to us during the school year.
