Undergraduate Program

Our programs focus on the development of language proficiency (speaking, writing, listening, and reading), cultural and linguistic knowledge, and critical thinking through the analytic study of literature. Undergraduate students in Languages, Literatures, and Cultures can expect to have small classes in languages, cultural history, linguistics, and literature.

A degree in a language prepares students for the following fields, and more:

Court interpreter, Bilingual officer/Teller/Clerk, Cultural Attaché, Cultural Officer, Customs/Immigration Officer, Editor, Escort/Interpreter/Guide, Teacher, Translator, travel Agent Tour Organizer, Travel Writer, UNESCO Official, FBI Agent, Foreign Diplomat, Foreign Correspondent, Foreign Service Officer, Foreign Service Peacekeeper, Foreign Social Worker, Human Resources Director, International Hotel Administrator, Int’l trade Specialist, Scientific Translator/Interpreter, Sports Agent, Journalist, Lawyer, Linguist, Overseas Plant Manager, Peace Corps Volunteer, Pharmaceutical Rep. , and more.

Language Majors

The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures offers the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in the following languages:

For the above three languages, the Department also offers a Teacher Education Program. This gives prospective teachers the expertise that the B.A. degree provides in conjunction with solid guidance in and preparation for teaching.

Language Minors

The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures offers undergraduate students the chance to pursue a minor in the following languages:

As of 7/2/2010, The Department will not be offering any Latin courses at this time and no new applications for the minor are being accepted.
