German Alumni New-Student Scholarship

Beginning with the fall semester 2008, scholarships will be awarded annually to 3 students who enter ISU as German majors. Applications are accepted each preceding spring semester up until May 31. Awards will be announced each year by the end of June at which time scholarship recipients will receive notification.

Candidate qualifications:

  • student must be new or transfer
  • student must enroll as a German major (can enroll at 100 or 200 level)

Applications should include the following:

  • your high school or college GPA and GPA in German
  • the number of years you have taken German
  • one letter of recommendation from a German instructor
  • a brief essay in English (or German, if possible, and depending on your level of proficiency), explaining
    • your interest in German,
    • your general intellectual interests,
    • your thoughts about your future career or profession, and
    • any other reasons you believe you should be considered especially for this scholarship

MJ Scholarships for seniors

The MJ Scholarships are awarded through the Honors Program. These scholarships were endowed by Marie Jessa, a 1926 graduate of Illinois State University who taught business education here from 1946-1966. The purpose of the award is 1) to honor and support Illinois State University seniors who not only have achieved academically, but who have also demonstrated initiative and creativity; and 2) to serve as a challenge for continued development of their potential as fully as possible during their senior year.

College of Arts and Sciences Scholarships

You may also qualify for some College of Arts and Sciences Student Scholarships and Grants, such as the CAS Undergraduate Scholar Fund, the Grabill-Homan Peace Prize, the Redbird 5 Scholarship the John and Susan Freed Scholarship and more.

David J. Parent Scholarship

The David J. Parent Scholarship is awarded annually each spring.

Candidate qualifications:

  • enrolled in good standing at Illinois State University
  • undergraduate student demonstrating strong academic achievement as evidenced by a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • currently majoring in a foreign language with students majoring in German to be given preference
  • Need is an important consideration
  • as much as can be perceived, love, commitment, and appreciation of a foreign culture should be observed in the student recipient

Nominations:

Applications are not sent in directly from the student. Instead, faculty in the Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Department nominate likely candidates.

Joan and Neil Styczynski Transfer Student Scholarship

The Joan and Neil Styczynski Transfer Student Scholarship was created by Joan and Neil Styczynski in support of the education community of Central Illinois through Illinois State University and Heartland Community College. With the scholarship, they are “paying back” for the generosity from which they benefited. It is their hope that the recipients of this scholarship will “pay it forward” in helping and affecting lives of young people in a positive way.

1985 and 1986 Scholarships

Both awards are for $500. Their applications, which can be found at the Development Office 401 Hovey Hall, are usually due in March of each year.

Class of 1985 Scholarship guidelines:

2.5 minimum GPA
Completed no fewer than 70 hours and no more than 90
demonstrated leadership and participation in campus activities
demonstrated financial need
submit applications, form and letters of recommendation
cannot have been prior recipients

Class of 1986 Scholarship guidelines:

3.0 minimum GPA
Completed no fewer than 70 hours and no more than 90
demonstrated leadership and participation in campus activities
demonstrated academic excellence
submit applications, form and letters of recommendation
cannot have been prior recipients
