​German Teacher Education Requirements

By following the list below, you will complete the course requirements for a major in German Teacher Education.

• GER 115: Second Year German Part I
• GER 116: Second Year German Part II
• GER 211: Introduction to German Literature
• GER 213: Intermediate German Composition
• GER 385: Selected Topics in German Literature or Culture
• GER 300-level elective class 
• GER 300-level elective class 
• GER 300-level elective class 
• GER 200 or 300-level elective class 
• GER 200 or 300-level elective class 
• GER 200 or 300-level elective class 
• LAN 319: Principles in World Language Learning (OPI requirement, see below)
• LAN 320: World Language Teaching in the K-12 setting (LAN 319 and LAN 320 must be taken together/offered only in fall semesters).
• LAN 321: Integrating Technology into the Foreign Language Classroom (fall semester only - check your individual plan of study to see if this is required for you)
  
  ** GER 285 and 385 (after taking it the first time) "Topics" courses may substitute for certain 200 and 300-level German classes, depending on the course content. Check with the German section for more information.

The National Criminal Background Check must be completed and returned before any student can register for or take any TCH or EAF courses.

Take these during your sophomore year:

• TCH 210: Child Growth and Development
• TCH 212: Issues in Secondary Education **

**C or better required in ENG 101 and COM 110, and in all courses that count toward certification.

Upon completion of 60 credit hours and anytime after, take:

• EAF 228, 231 OR 235 (228 preferred)
• TCH 216 lecture and lab: Principles and Practices for Teaching and Learning in Secondary Schools (students in German must contact TCH in order to register for the German TCH 216 lab).

You should be prepared to dedicate significant time in and outside of class to your TCH 210, 212, 216 and LAN 319/320.

Other requirements

Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 and a minimum major GPA of 3.0.
Students must have a grade of “C” or above in all required coursework that is part of their program. This includes all endorsement areas, major courses and professional education.

Required OPI score of Intermediate High for LAN 319 and LAN 320 and Advanced Low for Student Teaching.

Apply to student teaching (applications accepted in fall semesters only) 1 to 1 and half years prior to your planned student teaching semester.

Gateway 1 must be completed before student teaching.
Gateway 2 is completed during student teaching.
