Spanish Teacher Education Requirements
All Spanish Teacher Education majors must complete the requirements in the list below. Here is the checklist in pdf form.
- SPA 115: Second Year Spanish Part I*
- SPA 116: Second Year Spanish Part II*
- SPA 213: Written Spanish
(213 is the prerequisite for 215, 233, 243 and 244)**
- SPA 214: Oral Communication in Spanish
- SPA 215: Introduction to Spanish Linguistics
- SPA 233: Introduction to Hispanic Literature
- SPA 243: Cultura Española
- SPA 244: Hispanic American Civilization (a prerequisite for 243 and 244)
- SPA 323/324/326/327: one out of these Survey of Lit. courses (prerequisite is SPA 233)
- SPA 305/310/311/336/337/360/370/385: two out of these courses
- LAN 319: Principles in World Language Learning (fall only)
- LAN 320: World Language Teaching in the K-12 setting (fall only)
- LAN 321: Integrating Technology into the Foreign Language Classroom (fall only)
LAN 319 and LAN 320 must be taken together (offered only in fall semesters)
Required OPI score of Intermediate High for LAN 319 and LAN 320 and Advanced Low for Student Teaching.
The National Criminal Background Check must be completed and returned before any student can register for or take any TCH or EAF courses.
Take these during your sophomore or first semester of junior year:
- TCH 210: Child Growth and Development
- TCH 212: Issues in Secondary Education **
**C or better req. in ENG 101 and COM 110
Upon completion of 60 credit hours and anytime after, take:
- EAF 228, 231 OR 235 (228 strongly encouraged)
- TCH 216 lecture and lab: Principles and Practices for Teaching and Learning in Secondary Schools
You should be prepared to dedicate significant time in and outside of class to your TCH 210, 212, 216 and LAN 319/320.
Other requirements
Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 and a minimum major GPA of 3.0.
Students must have a grade of “C” or above in all required coursework that is part of their program. This includes all endorsement areas, major courses, and professional education.
Required OPI score of Intermediate High for LAN 319 and LAN 320 and Advanced Low for Student Teaching.
Apply to student teaching (applications accepted in fall semesters only) 1 to 1 and half years prior to your planned student teaching semester.
Gateway 1 must be completed before student teaching.
Gateway 2 is completed during student teaching.

AP credit in Spanish Language
- An AP score of 3 counts toward SPA 112
- An AP score of 4 counts toward SPA 112 and 115
- An AP score of 5 counts toward SPA 115 and 116
AP credit in Spanish Literature
- An AP score of 3, 4, or 5 counts toward SPA 233
