Gateway 1: Pre-Student Teaching

  • Fall student teachers must complete all Gateway 1 requirements by July 15.
  • Spring student teachers must complete all Gateway 1 requirements by December 15.
  • Student Teaching Applications are due one to one-and-a-half years before you plan to student teach in October of each year. Be sure to visit the Career Center for help creating your resume for this application, and keep your resume updated with each new clinical experience throughout your college years.

Gateway 1 requirements, called Milestones

Follow this step-by-step explanation of each of your Gateways and required Milestones.

  1. PBA Teacher Education Workshop (Recommended to do first)
  2. National Criminal Background Check* (ISU-specific background check)
  3. Violence Against Youth and Sex Offender Registries - completed by Lauby TEC staff
  4. 30 hours of coursework at ISU
  5. Communication 110 (Grade of C or better)
  6. English 101 (Grade of C or better)
  7. Communication 110 (Grade of C or better)
  8. Mandatory Reporter of Child Abuse Training
  9. Safety Education Assessment
  10. Cumulative GPA Requirement
  11. Department Approval - given by teacher ed advisor (Ms. Tackett)
  12. Disposition Concerns Assessments
  13. ISBE State Content Test*  
  14. Tuberculosis (TB) Test*

LAN-Specific Additional Requirements

Students majoring in teacher education in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (LAN) must also meet the following requirements:

  • Attend one informational meeting for prospective LAN teacher education majors, which is held each semester. Contact Mary Tackett for date/time.
  • Interview for departmental approval after you have attended the informational meeting. To be considered for admission to the LAN teacher education program, you must meet the following criteria:
    • Possess a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher at Illinois State.
    • Possess a major GPA of 3.00 or higher.
    • Demonstrate a positive disposition toward teaching via your interview and feedback provided by your professors in your major.
