Study Abroad

Illinois State professors are highly qualified instructors who will give you a diverse education here on campus. Yet nothing can replace living and studying in a country where one listens to and speaks the language in all situations.

How to Apply

Earn Credit Abroad

The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (LAN) strongly advises LAN students to choose a program from the list below. In most cases they have "prearticulated" courses, meaning students know in advance which courses abroad will count for which courses at Illinois State. The LAN advisor can guide students towards pre-articulated courses that will fulfill major and minor requirements.

There are many other destinations available through Study Abroad in the Office of International Studies and Programs. However, LAN faculty cannot feasibly pre-articulate courses for every destination.

Chile

  • Valparaiso

    Earn credit while pursuing service-learning opportunities in local schools or community organizations.

Costa Rica

  • Veritas

    Spanish majors or minors can earn credit during semester or summer study at Universidad Veritas.

México

  • Querétaro

    Semester and Summer terms available for Spanish majors and minor.

Panama

  • Panama City

    For Spanish majors and minors to complete their required Conversation and Culture course in an immersive environment.

Spain

  • Granada

    Semester or yearlong experience at Universidad de Granada in southern Spain.

    Faculty-led, four-week language immersion opportunity in the summer.

  • Bilbao

    Semester and summer programs in north central Spain, just south of the Bay of Biscay.

Apply to Study Abroad

Students in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (LAN) should follow these steps to apply to their study abroad program.

    Apply through the Office of International Studies and Programs Study Abroad office.

  • 2

    Contact the LAN faculty director for your trip.

  • 3

    Contact the LAN advisor to have your name added to the list for the course scheduling meeting if you plan to study in Granada, Angers, or Grenoble. Otherwise, the faculty director for your trip will sign off on your course academic planning form.
